THE ARTS+ BUILDS ON SUCCESSFUL PREMIERE

Dear THE ARTS+ friends,

We did it! In its second year, THE ARTS+ not only managed to double its exhibition space, but also to top its previous success, with the participation of enthusiastic visitors and members of the press as well as 120 speakers from 20 countries. The Culture Innovation Summit on Wednesday – held simultaneously to the working session of the European ministers of culture – in particular contributed to this achievement, with 70 representatives of European cultural politics and the cultural scene working together on the future of culture and technology. It is already clear now that both of these policy-oriented events will be continued in 2018.

I would like to express my thanks for this success – to all our partners, exhibitors, speakers, visitors and of course to our committed and wonderful team!

With this newsletter, we would like to offer you a little post-event report. And one thing is for sure: After the festival is before the festival – we’re already looking forward to THE ARTS+ 2018!

Warm regards,
Holger Volland

CHARTING NEW TERRITORY: A COMPASS FOR CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
Illustration created during the "Uncharted Territory" session by graphic recorder Anne Lehmann.

For this year’s edition of THE ARTS+, Europeana invited pioneering cultural institutions to present their digital strategies. Journalist Michael Gubbins (Sampomedia) led the discussion on digital transformation in museums and libraries. In this special extended blog post, Gubbins presents some promising directions gleaned from the event. The author is an experienced analyst, journalist and consultant with particular expertise in film and digital media. »

“DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY MAKES PEOPLE CURIOUS, IT BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS.”

Digitalisation and social media are also fundamentally changing how museums and artists work. In her article, Anika Meier, a freelance writer and blogger (for Monopol and Spiegel Online, among others), describes the digital strategies and tools that museums like the Städel, artists like John Craig Freeman and cultural foundations like Europeana are using today and in the future. »
